PEACE Building works with and supports the Batwa to adapt to the changing world dynamics due to climate crisis. Through permaculture, PEACE Foundation reminds the Batwa of their rich indigenous knowledge and sustainability practices. The Batwa in Bundibugyo are a small cluster of minority people leaving on the edge of the Semuliki National Park. Besides being known as hunters and free fruit gatherers from the forests, they extracted of medicine, firewood and free mushrooms from forests. However, this was regulated by government as all Batwa in Uganda got displaced from the conservation national parks. Besides providing them with permaculture food harvests from the PEACE Foundation, they also access other projects and initiatives such as permaculture trainings, advocacy, climate crisis actions etc.
PEACE Foundation cluster member groups harvesting their vegetables in Butama IV village Mirambi sub county. This week got privileged to join one of the community groups supported by PEACE Foundation as they were harvesting egg plants/nkedhengu/entonga. Members of the group were provided with vegetable seedlings which they planted and have been harvesting to support their group members food wise. They harvest every after two days with each member taking home a share for the family. The harvest is expected to continue through the year. Members have tested and witnessed growing of vegetables based on organic farming practices. Some of the members attended a PDC/Permaculture Design Course last December 2023. From our training communities are encouraged to demonstrate their skills and knowledge by solving social challenges informed by earth care, people care and fair share permaculture ethics. In the process, the Foundation/PEACE Foundation is enthusiastic to build social cohesion and peaceful collaborations through permaculture. We appreciate our partners and friends supporting our action.
