Permaculture Education, Action and Community Empowerment (PEACE) Foundation

In the heart of Western Uganda, the Permaculture Education, Action and Community Empowerment (PEACE) Foundation is spearheading a movement—one rooted in healing, empowerment, and sustainability. As a grassroots humanitarian and development organization, PEACE Foundation is dedicated to addressing the intertwined challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and social inequality by using the powerful and holistic framework of permaculture.

Our Vision: a hunger free society where every household is free from food stress and every child is free from malnutrition and every soul matter

At the core of our mission is the belief that every person deserves a life of dignity, and every ecosystem deserves a chance to thrive. Through community-led action, we aim to build resilient local systems that restore the environment while empowering people—particularly marginalized children, youth, and women—with the knowledge and tools they need to lead sustainable lives.

In a region long affected by environmental degradation and socio-economic hardship, permaculture offers a path forward—one that aligns with indigenous knowledge, cultural values, and the natural rhythms of the earth

Real Impact, Real People

Thanks to the generous support, prayers, and partnerships we’ve received, our work has already brought hope and transformation to communities across Bundibugyo and beyond:

  • Youth and women’s empowerment through permaculture training and peer-led learning networks.
  • Support to landless Indigenous Batwa communities, and those displaced by floods and landslides—offering not just aid, but a renewed sense of purpose, belonging, and stability.
  • Community-based ecosystem restoration efforts that regenerate degraded land and create sustainable local food systems.
  • Revival of African indigenous values of Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share—principles that align perfectly with permaculture ethics.

These efforts are more than just projects, they are lifelines and revival opportunities for saving the future, humanity and biodiversity.

The reason for permaculture

Permaculture is more than farming—it is a design science for sustainability, based on fundamental principles that work with nature rather than against it. It’s about creating regenerative systems where land, water, people, and resources interact in balance.

While its concepts may seem new in Bundibugyo, they echo traditional rural African knowledge—making permaculture both innovative and culturally relevant. This synergy allows PEACE Foundation to rebuild ecosystems and communities simultaneously, in ways that are both practical, deeply meaningful and less costly.

Our approach goes beyond short-term aid. We focus on long-term, systemic change—building self-sufficiency, resilience, and local ownership from the ground up.

Looking forward, we are determined to building durable Solutions for the Batwa and other communities at risk of the effects of climate change in the region.

We are now focused on scaling our impact, particularly in support of the indigenous Batwa communities, who continue to face extreme marginalization and environmental vulnerability.

In this we aim at:

  • Establishing localized food systems and community food baskets to combat hunger and malnutrition.
  • Expanding training and education in permaculture design across youth and women’s groups.
  • Deepening ecosystem restoration projects to enhance climate resilience.
  • Strengthening community networks and local leadership for long-term sustainability of the interventions we are undertaking through community led permaculture collaborations.
